Popis

"The Wild Palms" is a novel by William Faulkner that tells two separate but connected stories. The first story follows Harry Wilburn, a medical student who quits his job and runs off with married Charlotte. As he struggles with the consequences of their illicit romance, Harry’s life unravels as he becomes increasingly reckless. Tragedy strikes when Charlotte becomes pregnant and faces a dangerous miscarriage, and Harry ends up in jail, choosing between cyanide and prison. The second story revolves around an unnamed criminal called the Chief. He served 199 years in prison for robbing a gas station with a woman and another man. The old man and the pregnant woman build up during the reception of the flood, and attach themselves for seven weeks. Despite these ordeals, he eventually escapes but is arrested for trying to escape and sentenced to another ten years in prison. Both Harry and The Old Men have lives in prison driven by struggles with women and the consequences of their choices. Faulkner uses this interlocking narrative to explore themes of love, duty, and the consequences of human actions. "The Wild Palms" showcases Faulkner's storytelling skills and ability to craft complex stories filled with rich human experiences.
